AAA Seeks Top School Crossing Guards for Award

Phoenix, Ariz., Jan. 31, 2012. Rain or shine, crossing guards work diligently to protect Arizona’s school children. To honor the outstanding guards in our communities, AAA Arizona is calling for nominations for its fifth annual Crossing Guard of the Year Award. The deadline to submit nominations is March 23, 2012.

“Crossing guards provide an invaluable, life-saving service by ensuring children get to and from school safely,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “We’re proud to show our appreciation for their efforts and dedication.”

AAA invites students, parents, school administrators, faculty, staff and community members to nominate candidates whom they believe deserve the Crossing Guard of the Year designation. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

The auto club’s traffic safety staff will evaluate nominations to select finalists for the award based on dedication, friendliness, professionalism and safety. The honors will be awarded to the two finalists, one from Maricopa County and one from Pima County, who demonstrate the best example of the procedures and responsibilities outlined in AAA’s Handbook for Adult Crossing Guards. Winners will be announced on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, April 27, 2012. Winners will receive a recognition plaque and a $100 Target gift card, courtesy of AAA Arizona.

Last year, Nick Sertich of Anasazi Elementary School in Scottsdale and Merrill Broad of Sewell Elementary School in Tucson earned the coveted title, after receiving a combined more than 200 nominations from students, parents, community members and school.

Nomination forms are available at all Maricopa County and Pima County school district offices or can be downloaded online at az.aaa.com/news/traffic/CrossingGuardoftheYear.htm.  Completed forms can be mailed to AAA Arizona, Attn: Public Affairs, 3144 N. 7th Avenue, Phoenix, Ariz., 85013, faxed to (602) 776-0466, or emailed to publicrelations@arizona.aaa.com. Nominations must be submitted by March 23, 2012.
