ASK THE EXPERT
Q: My vehicle has a chipped windshield. Should I have it repaired or should I
replace the entire windshield?
A: There are several factors that determine whether
a windshield should be repaired or replaced. Every
chip is different. If the chip is larger than the size
of a quarter or creates a crack in the windshield that
is larger than a dollar bill, the windshield should
be replaced. If the chip is in the driver’s line of
sight (defined as the driver-side windshield-wiper
sweep area), the windshield should be replaced, regardless
of the size of the chip. When you repair a chipped
windshield, in some instances, you may still have a
small blemish on the glass, but the repair will prevent
the chip from spreading.
When choosing a company to repair or replace your windshield,
make certain you choose a reputable one that specializes
in automotive glass. These companies are aware of all
the safety issues that govern the installation of this
structural component of your vehicle, and in most cases,
will help you process your claim with your insurance
company. You should ask if the installers are certified
by the National Glass Association (NGA) and make certain
they use high quality glass that meets or exceeds manufacturer
standards – not all glass is created equal. There are
many auto glass companies here in Arizona, but only
about 20 percent are NGA certified.
Many auto glass companies offer mobile service as well.
They can repair or replace your windshield at your
home or office, so that you do not have to disrupt
your day. In most cases, your vehicle is safe to drive
within a few hours after the installation is complete,
but you need to allow 24 hours cure time before washing
your vehicle. If your windshield is repaired, the vehicle
is safe to drive and wash within a few minutes of the
repair being completed.
