I have just finished reading your Carefree article (May/June, page 34) and it is very interesting.  I was especially interested in the photo and description of the sundial. Joe Wong and John Yellot were responsible for the solar heating panel system, which provided heat for several of the nearby stores. We first saw the sundial in 1965 when we moved to Phoenix.

Seat Belt Rebuttal
I just had to chuckle over the level of righteous indignation displayed by the letters in the May/June issue (Members’ Forum, page 10). Regarding the photo illustration allegedly sans seat belts, calm down, all three of you!  First of all, the photo is not definite as far as belt use/no belt use goes. While the original, slightly cropped shot does indeed look as though no belts are in use, the slightly wider print of the same shot used with the letters does appear to clearly show a bit of the shoulder belt in use by the passenger (although the driver does appear to be unbelted in both).  The angle of the shot makes it hard to tell--but so what?  It's just an illustration to an article, not a recommendation to drive without being belted in!

Please tell everyone who wrote in regarding the two young people featured in your insurance article to take a second or third look at the picture.  The young man most definitely has his seat beat on.  Look in the upper left-hand corner and you can see part of the strap.  As for the young woman, how in the heck can they tell she doesn't also have one on?

Photo Mapping
I was wondering if you could tell me where the motel on the cover (May/June) is located?  I can't find any indication, other than that the photo was taken by Ed Freeman.

Also, were the two photos in the contents of The Do Drop Inn and a trailer (also by Ed Freeman, pages 5 and 6) taken in the same town as the El Morocco Motel on the front cover?

Editors reply …
We’ve received a number of similar inquiries regarding the whereabouts of the subjects featured in our May/June cover and contents photography.  We went back to Ed Freeman in order to shed some light on the matter.

The El Morocco Motel complete with sign is located in downtown Bakersfield, Calif. The Cal-Tex Auto Parts (page 3) at one time stood off Route 111 in Coachella, Calif. The Do Drop Inn (page 5) lies somewhere along Route 66 in California — exact location unknown. Finally, the trailer on page 6 was shot at a trailer park in Desert Shores, a small town on the shores of the Salton Sea, southeast of Palm Springs. For additional information visit edfreeman.com.

Correction
In the May/June review of the Nissan Rogue (test drive, page 63), the price and mileage was listed incorrectly. The Rogue starts at $19,995, with mileage rated at 22/27 (city/highway). We apologize for the error.
