Motorists' Rights
The January/February President’s Message states “We will evaluate any legislation to make sure that motorists’ rights are protected.” I moved here from California where driving was always described as a “privilege,” not a “right.” With that background, I was curious and checked the Arizona Drivers Manual and found that driving is described as a right in that publication as well.

In the interest of accuracy, I believe the President’s message should have referred to protecting motorists’ privileges rather than rights.  We have no “right” to drive and therefore, any restriction may be imposed by the state without violating our rights.

I disagree with Mr. McDowell’s message about photo radar (January/February, page 8). It is a sham designed simply to enhance the budgets of local state and municipal governments.  The money raised will never go exclusively to traffic-safety programs and, if it did, they would just cut the department's budget in other areas to make up for it. The companies that make these devices and the governments that use them invariably interpret the statistics to support putting money in their pockets. Most people are too busy with their lives to protest this and the governments and private manufacturing companies are taking advantage of them.  In case you’re wondering, I have never received a ticket from one of these devices.

Car Buying Kudos
I am writing to tell you that my recent experience with the AAA car-buying program was the most positive one I believe I have ever had. I especially want to single out Gerry Wilson, who worked with my wife and me. We are very happy with the car we selected. Gerry gave us the guidance and information we needed to make an intelligent purchase. Because of him we definitely intend to buy any future automobiles through AAA.

I wish to express our thanks and deep appreciation for the professional services that were rendered by your car-buying service. From the moment we made contact with Ed Bukoski regarding our new car search, he demonstrated a dedicated desire to assist us.
Prior to engaging Ed, if someone had told us purchasing a car could be a pleasant event, we would have encouraged them to seek mental help. Offering the services of a gentleman like Ed makes the whole AAA membership an extremely valuable asset.
