New Resources and Tools for Senior Drivers
Statistically, senior drivers have the lowest traffic crash rates of any age
group, but eventually, everyone has limitations. AAA wants to let these drivers
and their caregivers know that there is help available. Listed below are
some of the tools and resources to assist aging drivers and their families.
- AAAseniors.com is
a web site created for seniors and their families.
Over many years, AAA has developed significant
depth of knowledge on senior driver safety, as
well as a variety of products, resources and
tools to help. All of this valuable information,
along with research from the AAA Foundation for
Traffic Safety, can be found on this website.
The site includes tips on how help a senior driver
and safe driving, expert advice, fact sheets,
as well as links to AAA resources like CarFit,
AAA Roadwise Review and the Drivers 55 Plus Assessment
tool.
- AAA Roadwise Review is a scientifically validated
screening tool developed by AAA and noted transportation
safety researchers. Available on CD-ROM, this
tool allows seniors to measure, in the privacy
of their own home, the eight functional abilities
shown to be the strongest predictors of crash
risk among older drivers. Roadwise Review is
$8.99 for AAA members. To order, visit AAAaz.com/news/articles/roadwisereview.htm
or call 602-241-2945.
- Keeping the Keys, a free workshop for seniors
and their families, provides essential information
to help seniors evaluate their driving skills
and to stay on the road as safely as possible.

Light Rail Starts Soon!
In December, light rail is scheduled to begin service
along the approximate 20-mile segment in Phoenix,
Tempe and Mesa. For updated traffic restrictions
and information, visit lightrail.org/traffic.
Listed below are some light-rail safety tips:
- At intersections, never stop or park your car
or bike on light rail tracks.
- Stop on red and turn left only with a green
arrow.
- Never try to beat a train through the intersection.
- Light rail trains are quiet. Listen for warning
bells and watch for flashing headlights on the
train.
- Look both ways before crossing the tracks by
car or bike.
- Treat METRO high-voltage power lines with the
same respect as utility company lines.
- Don’t walk on or stand near the tracks.
- Jaywalking is illegal and unsafe. Cross only
at crosswalks and obey the crosswalk signals.
- Remind your children to stop, look and listen
— especially around light rail tracks.
- Teach children to cross intersections only
in a crosswalk and to obey the crosswalk signs.
- Never allow children to play near the tracks
and never fly kites or models near the high-voltage
overhead power lines.
- When walking with children, keep them together
and away from the tracks.
- Skateboarding, rollerblading and riding bikes
in the guideway or on light rail platforms is
not safe and is not permitted.
