Getting Away
The Royal Palms Resort and Spa
Named for the imposing trees lining its entryway,
the Royal Palms Inn first opened to guests in the
winter of 1948. It was originally built in 1929 as
a private mansion for Delos T. Cooke, an executive
for Cunard Steamship and nephew of financier J.P.
Morgan.
In 1997, the Mediterranean Spanish Colonial-style
mansion underwent a multi-million dollar restoration
and has since become a favorite of the rich and famous.
Even President Bush has been known to stay at the
property while in town.
However, the resort remains a favorite as a romantic
getaway for discriminating travelers from around
the world. So much so, it actually has a director
of romance on staff.
The intimate grounds are replete with reflection
pools, old-world fountains, charming stone walkways,
hidden gardens, and period Italian and Moorish tiles.
Orange and palm trees are seemingly everywhere, along
with charming outdoor fireplaces surrounded by overstuffed
chairs to cozy up in on a cool desert evening.
Lodging choices include 62 individual Deluxe Casitas
with canopied beds, hand-painted furniture, fireplaces,
and French doors with wooden shutters that open to
private walled patios, many with striking views of
Camelback Mountain.
There are also 34 Plaza Rooms and 34 Plaza Suites
located in a two-story building adjacent to Camelback
Road. While complete with luxury amenities and furnishings,
they don’t compare to the Casitas for charm and intimacy.
If price isn’t a consideration, there are three villas
and a presidential suite available with round-the-clock
service to meet your every need — and even some you
hadn’t thought of.
The resort features a menu of spa treatments at the
Alvadora Spa and dining doesn’t get much better than
the Mediterranean cuisine at the award-winning T.
Cook’s .
From its décor to its luxurious tranquility, the
Royal Palms is the perfect place to celebrate an
anniversary, present an engagement ring or host a
wedding. Whether it’s placing rose petals on a turned-down
bed or topping a bubble bath with them,
the director of romance can make it all happen.
