Best in the West
Simultaneous billing as the “Dude Ranch Ranch Capitol
of the World” and “Arizona’s Most Western Community”
doesn’t make Wickenburg any less keen to call out
Scottsdale for the brand “The West’s most Western
Town.” While Scottsdale skews sophisticated these days, Wickenburg remains close to its roots.
Indeed, the town’s website proclaims, “We are tradition.
We are authentic.”
Precipitated by a gold strike, Wickenburg was founded
in 1863 and experienced decades of hardship before
the railroad finally ushered in a period of prosperity
in 1895. Today, the old rail depot — which now
houses the chamber of commerce — still graces main
street along with many other historic structures.
Wickenburg also corners the market on western wear
and has carved out a niche as the premiere purveyor
of the guest ranch experience. Dude ranches have
flourished since the 1920s, lead by Bar FX Ranch
and Remuda (long before it became synonymous with
eating-disorder treatment).
Wickenburg cements its status through an array
of nationally recognized events from Gold Rush
Days to the annual DC Ride. In January, it was
named one of True West Magazine’s “Top 10
True West Towns,” for the third year running.
