GETTING
AWAY
Training Season
Arizona is hardly a celebrity sanctuary, but come
March, sports fans experience open season on major
leaguers. Through April 2, it’s equal opportunity
hunting; while Giants roam the streets of Scottsdale,
Indians migrate west to Goodyear and Royal watchers
can head to Surprise, which simultaneously hosts
Royals and Rangers.
During the height of the season, sightings can
be made almost anywhere by anyone. One year I spotted
a gaggle of Mariners at a Peoria salon where I
worked reception (’til then, the most notable walk-in
had been Li
sa Whelchel, a.k.a. Blair from The
Facts of Life.)
But the surest way to track multiple species is
through field study. From Hi Corbett to Camelback
Ranch, sparring will take place across the Valley
until one team emerges king of the Cactus League.
