Culture Melding
I enjoy your magazine very much. I approached
the article “Going Native” (March/April) with some apprehension. I hoped to find
it informative about Native American spas in
the Southwest, but feared inaccuracies.
The information was quite interesting, however;
it was disconcerting to hear the writer refer
to “Native American culture” as if the hundreds
of tribes on this continent share one culture.
It would have been interesting to know which
of the many Native American cultures much of
the information was drawn from, and how authentic
the rituals actually are.

I read with interest your article on Native
American spas. The similarities between Native
American medicine and Chinese Native Medicine
are numerous. [For instance], Chinese “maxibustion”
uses a bundle of herbs tied together, lit with
a match, and when glowing well, the bundle is
passed over the body allowing the fumes to touch
the skin. I wonder if the similarities could
be traced back to migrations that took place
over the land bridge connecting Asia to Alaska
many thousands of years ago.

Looking at your Test Drives in the March/April
issue, I’m somewhat puzzled by your blah comments
on the Ford Escape.
We have a 2005 Escape XLT with the V-6 (not a
hybrid) with about 40,000 miles on it. The fit,
finish, and handling are excellent and I have
verified the mileage over the past year as 21.4
to 22.6 miles per gallon around town and 27.7
to 28.2 on long trips, which is much better than
a lot of the new snazzy car models. I’d buy another
one in a flash.

Corrections
In our March/April issue, the article “Honoring
the Code Talkers,” stated that the code talkers
received Congressional Medals of Honor (Road
Trip), which is a bit of a misnomer.
To be precise, in 2001, the code talkers were
awarded Congressional Gold Medals.
In our approved auto repair listing, “diesel
engine repairs” and “tires and rims” were represented
by the letters “D” and “T,” in the actual list,
while the key assigned the numbers 10 and 11
to those repairs.
