Getting Away

The Inn at 410
By Jim Prueter

Nestled on a quiet side street just three blocks from historic downtown Flagstaff, The Inn at 410 is an easy stroll to numerous fine restaurants, interesting boutiques and city parks. If all that sounds too “urban,” take comfort in the fact that you’re just a short 80 miles to the Grand Canyon and even closer to scenic Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Sunset Crater and the cliff dwellings of Walnut Canyon.

Built in 1894, the inn has been home to a wealthy banker and a Northern Arizona University fraternity. Today it is a charming bed and breakfast owned by Gordon Watkins, who has worked for major hotels including The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.

A distinctive collection of accommodations, each of the nine rooms has been fashioned to provide guests with a unique experience with the utmost in comfort, luxury and privacy. All rooms have a private bath, cozy fireplace, VHS/DVD player and TV (no cable) and an extensive video library.

Our stay was in the Southwest with a separate sitting room, large Jacuzzi whirlpool tub, kiva-style fireplace and an oversized king bed.

Families may want to consider the Dakota Suite, which accommodates up to five people and features weathered barn wood, a separate sitting room with fireplace, and a queen-sized log bed.

We also liked Monet’s Garden that features walk-in shower, fireplace, king-size bed and a private porch that overlooks the garden patio.

The dining area is warm and inviting with a large picture window, five tables, and always-available fresh baked cookies, hot cider with brandy or seasonal lemonade with vodka or iced tea with Southern Comfort. All are available alcohol-free as well.

The gourmet breakfast is not to be missed. Our breakfast featured fresh peach-orange juice, a medley of mixed fruits, orange-stuffed French toast with Kim’s specialty plum sauce made from plums grown on the property, and brown-sugar baked ham.

Other breakfast menus include pecan custard French toast, Southwest frittata, banana oatmeal pancakes and hash brown pie.
With a friendly staff, luxurious amenities, and thoughtful touches, The Inn at 410 will surpass your expectations and impress you with its charm.
