The safest place
to be in an earthquake — suspended 4,000 feet above the
Colorado River on a platform of glass? Maybe so, according to engineering tests
for the Grand Canyon Skywalk — and add hurricanes and emergency landings
to that list as well.
What is it
Constructed through a partnership between the Hualapai tribe and entrepreneur
David Jin of Las Vegas, the Skywalk is built to withstand gale-force winds, 8.0
magnitude earthquakes and the weight of 71 Boeing 747 airplanes. Construction
on the glass cantilever-designed bridge, which began in 2004, is now approaching
completion. Perched off a precipice in Grand Canyon West, the Skywalk is scheduled
to open to the public on March 28, 2007. Visit www.grandcanyonskywalk.com for
more information.
Tea
Time
Is there anything
more genteel than afternoon tea? The
Arizona Biltmore is in its 78th season
of keeping this royal tradition
alive. The eclectic daily menu
includes sandwiches, scones, pastries
and, of course, tea. Call 602-955-6600
for reservations.
Sweet treat(ment)
A box of chocolates
for Valentine’s
Day is a good gift, but you have
to admit, it’s not a very creative
one. Why not give your sweet his
or her sweets in the form of a spa
treatment? The Pointe Hilton Resorts
at Tapatio Cliffs and Squaw Peak
offer My Tempest Truffle Spa Treatment,
which includes a chocolate body scrub,
chocolate decadence pedicure and
a box of truffles, for $174. For
gift certificates or to make an appointment,
contact the Tocasierra Spa & Salon
at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak (602-906-3820)
or the Tocaloma Spa & Salon at
Tapatio Cliffs (602-375-4645).
