Looking Back
Parada del Sol
With the thundering of horse hooves marking their
arrival, the Hashnife Pony Express riders - bearing
authentic US mail - storm Scottsdale’s posh streets
and signal the official opening of Parada del Sol.
A fitting tradition, for forty-nine years the annual
resurrection of the short-lived but long-lored mail
carriers has heralded the start of a month of festivities
that glory in the romance of a bygone west. Sponsored
by the Scottsdale Jaycees since 1954, Parada del
Sol underscores the legends that flavor the southwest
through staged gunfights, robberies, kangaroo court,
and a Best Beard Growing Contest. The festival culminates
in a week of rodeo performances and a magnificent
equestrian event that pulls rank as “World’s Largest
Horse Drawn Parade”.
