Arcosanti
It’s a swift journey from the hothouse to the compost
heap at Arcosanti, Paolo Soleri’s urban laboratory
situated in Arizona’s high desert. The three-dimensional,
pedestrian-oriented prototype city is built upon
Soleri’s theory of arcology, which integrates ecology
and architecture. Addressing Soleri’s concerns
about urban sprawl and waste, Arcosanti’s dense
infrastructure and multi-use building designs eliminate
the need for automobiles and maintain a close proximity
between community and agricultural areas. Greenhouse
architecture is used to generate energy for lighting,
heating and cooling.
Overseen by the Cosanti Foundation, Arcosanti has
been under construction since 1970. The Cosanti Foundation
welcomes student and volunteer participation in Arcosanti’s
continuing growth and development.

Go Fly a Kite
Over the years, kite flying has evolved from a passive
pastime into an active sport. The American Kitefliers
Association, founded in 1964, now has more than
4,000 members in 35 countries. Hundreds of
kites will fill the skies over Huntington Beach
Pier during the Sixth Annual Kite Party, February
23-24. Some of the best professional kite flyers
from around the world have attended this non-competitive
event, named the best in the country by the Kite
Trade Association International, to showcase their
kite flying skills. The event is sponsored by The
Kite Connection, a local shop on the Huntington
Beach pier that has been supplying sport kites
for 25 years. 714-536-3630

NEAR
Now through March, the Phoenix Art Museum is hosting
the Illuminated Manuscripts show, featuring
the first handwritten and illuminated Bible produced
since the advent of the printing press 500 years
ago. Following in the tradition of ancient scribes
and artist, each page of the sacred text is decorated
or “illuminated” in paint and gold, creating an
original artwork on oversized vellum. The show
juxtaposes the nearly complete work, begun in 1998,
with collections of rare and ancient manuscripts
and early printed Biblical texts. 602-257-1222,

FARTHER
Starting February 15, the San Diego Natural History
will reveal A Day in Pompeii, through startling
preserved objects that offer a glimpse of daily
life in the ancient city. The show includes body
casts of eight of Vesuvius’ victims, starkly dramatizing
the last moments of this once-thriving seaport.

Perpetual sunshine, a bicycle-friendly infrastructure
and the annual El Tour de Tucson are a few reasons
for Tucson’s burgeoning reputation among enthusiasts. Desert
