A good kind of pressure
Keeping tires at the right pressure is important on the track — and on the road. It means better handling, better gas economy, and less tire wear. In racing, the right pressure is different at different tracks — and from tire to tire. For example, in California at Fontana we run 22 psi in the left front, 20 in the left rear, 45 in the right front, 42 in the right rear. We make only left turns, so outside tires need to be harder. On the street it’s simpler. I check my own car’s tire pressure monthly — and keep it the same in all four. I like to run tires hard, near the maximum pressure shown on the sidewall. Lots of people use the lower pressure given in the car’s owner’s manual. That’s good too. Use your own high-quality gauge and check the pressure before driving heats up your tires. -Jim Fennig
