So you're a smart driver?
Distracted drivers do the darnedest things. Little-known fact: The first car ride resulted in the first car crash.
In 1885, auto pioneer Karl Benz rolled out his invention, started the engine, and drove into a wall. He was so excited, he said later, that he forgot to steer. Whether it's touching up mascara or saluting a tailgater with the occasional digitus impudicus, we've all let ourselves be distracted behind the wheel. And driver inattention accounts for nearly 80 percent of car crashes. Here are some ways to stay sharp on the road.
- Think, then steer. Have a mental picture of the destination and route. If you need a map, study it before starting out.
- Do a cabin check. Adjust your seat, air-conditioning, mirrors, radio station, etc., before pulling into traffic.
- Park your emotions. Strong feelings affect our ability to make judgments and to process information. Never drive while you're angry or-like Karl Benz-overly excited.
- Hang up. If you absolutely must use a cell phone, pull over-or at least employ a hands-free device.
- Forgive and forget. So some jerk sliced into your lane. Is that really worth a confrontation? Don't beep. Don't stare. Stay cool and keep your distance. -Nino Padova
