Eclectic Coffee
Copper Star Coffee, Phoenix.
“Located on the curve of
7th Avenue in the historic Melrose district, this
cute converted auto garage offers good locally-roasted
coffee, pleasant service and home-baked muffins,” says
Laura Cummings of Phoenix. “If you don’t
have time to lounge on the comfy couch, sit on the
patio or use the free wi-fi, you can pull into the
drive through to ‘fuel up’ next to the
antique gas pumps. Owners Bill and Ginger are usually
on the premises and are very friendly.” 4220
N. 7th Ave., 602-266-2136, copperstarcoffee.com.
Ike’s
Coffee and Tea, Tucson
“From hot tea to Italian sodas to hot or cold coffee — it’s
all yummy!” praises Julie Shoemaker of Scottsdale. “I’ve
never been disappointed with any of their drinks, plus they have a very rustic
look with both indoor and outdoor seating.” 3400 E. Speedway Blvd., 520-323-7205;
100 N. Stone Ave., 520-792-1800.
Into the
Bean, Mesa
A gathering place for poets, artists and musicians,
this local hangout across the street from Mesa Community
College welcomes everyone. “At this shop, you
feel at home right away,” says Denise Carrig
of Mesa. “The owner is down to earth and works
hard, and the coffee is great too.” 1710 W. Southern

Macy’s
European Coffee House, Flagstaff
“You may find coffee as good as ours, but you’ll never find any
better,” claims Macy’s website. A Flagstaff fixture for more than
25 years, Macy’s is committed to supporting small coffee growers and
co-op farms. Their beans are roasted almost everyday to achieve an exceptional,
fresh flavor. The coffeehouse also features an all-vegetarian menu with wheat-free,
dairy-free and vegan options. 14 S. Beaver St., 928-774-2243, macyscoffee.net.
Old Bisbee
Roasters, Bisbee
Not really a coffee “house,” owner and
proprietor Seth Appell sets up shop in Peddlers Alley,
giving away free espresso shots and selling his roasted
to taste coffee beans. Locals and visitors alike are
quickly hooked on the rich, fresh coffee. Old Bisbee
Roasters supports small farms and, whenever possible,
prints the coffee grower’s name or farm name
and growing region on the label. Much of Appell’s
business is via the Internet, and orders placed before
1 p.m. are roasted and shipped the day they are received.
Old Bisbee Roasters’ coffee is served at many
local establishments, such as the Letson Loft Hotel,
featured on page 28 of this issue. Check them out in
the April issue of Gourmet magazine as well. Peddlers
Alley, 866-432-5063, oldbisbeeroasters.com.
Prescott
Coffee Roasters, Prescott
“This is the best coffee, served in a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere.
I am a health nut, so I especially love their organic coffee,” says Donna
Lowy of Prescott. “Oh, I almost forgot. They also serve homemade goodies
to go with your coffee — not that packaged stuff!” 318 W. Gurley
St., 928-717-0190, prescottcoffeeroasters.com.
Willow
House, Phoenix
“Located in the Roosevelt historic district, this place is a great local
shop. Each time I’ve been there, I’ve experienced an eclectic mix
of people, food and stuff for sale by local artists,” writes Michelle
Donati of Phoenix. “They sometimes have great live music, the staff
is awesome and the coffee is great too. The atmosphere, however, makes this
place one of my favorite coffee shops in all of Arizona.” 149 W. McDowell
Rd., 602-252-0272.
