Seeing Stars
Thank you for the superb article “Star Junkies” in
the March/April issue (page 30). Huachuca Astronomy
Club (HAC) members have been instrumental in getting
new lighting ordinances enacted. Now we must educate
the public to preserve the treasure of our dark skies.
HAC members have an impressive record of accomplishment,
discovering more than 150 minor planets, many supernovae
and even a comet. These feats would not be possible
under light-polluted skies. Arizonans need to recognize
this precious resource and help keep our skies dark.

I greatly enjoyed the astronomy
article in the online edition of Highroads, and appreciated
all the credits, including the links at the end of
the article (“Star Junkies,” page 30 of
the print edition). It made further research
into the subject matter more accessible. I personally
will be trying to visit at least one, if not many,
of the places linked in the article. Thanks again.

Top Cars?
Your choices for Top Cars of 2007, evidently, were
made without considering gas mileage (March/April,
page 44). Today, purchasing a vehicle delivering only
13 miles per gallon borders on irresponsible. Over
half of your “top picks” specify less than
20! Later in the magazine, the Test Drive (page 58)
lists six of seven vehicles returning less than 20
mpg. Is there truly a dearth of environmentally friendly
vehicles coming to market?

It is very disappointing
that you drew attention to the Toyota Tundra as your
most important vehicle, another gas-guzzling “American
truck” whose fuel “economy” was listed
as 15/18. With gas prices climbing again, I’m
sure you could have found a greener vehicle. Your magazine does
not need to feed America's ego.

Editor’s
reply: We chose the Most Important Vehicle based
on overall impact to the automotive industry. Toyota
has virtually captured the passenger car market and
now, with its latest entry into the full-sized truck
segment, is focused at the heart of American brands,
who have traditionally dominated there. The new Tundra,
for better or worse, will have an important impact
on the industry.
