Phoenix, Ariz., July 8, 2010. With the second holiday weekend of the summer in the rearview mirror, gas prices across the state and country are beginning to recede. Statewide, today’s fuel price is $2.767 per gallon, a drop of nearly two cents from last week. Nationwide, prices have fallen by nearly four pennies to $2.717 per gallon.
As prices began to recede this week, the price of crude oil traded in the mid $70 per barrel range. Meanwhile, in its weekly report, the Department of Energy reported a slight drop in crude inventories and an increase in fuel supplies.
“Following a tightened price over the Fourth of July holiday, prices have begun to soften this week,” said Linda Gorman, public affairs director for AAA Arizona. “Given current market factors, including healthy inventories and soft demand, we do not anticipate a major price shift in either direction in the near future. However, we do anticipate that prices will hold steady in the short-term, barring unforeseen circumstances.”
Statewide, Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high fuel averages at $2.567 and $2.963 per gallon, respectively. In the lower 48 states, South Carolina and California hold these extremes at $2.480 and $3.144 per gallon, respectively.

*The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units. The BTU-adjusted price is calculated and displayed as part of AAA's Fuel Gauge Report because according to the Energy Information Administration, E-85 delivers approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. Because "flexible fuel" vehicles can operate on conventional fuel and E-85, the BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is essential to understanding the cost implications of each fuel choice for consumers.
AAA Arizona’s Weekly Fuel Gauge includes data from gasoline stations in every Arizona community. However, only major metropolitan areas are shown in the table above. Local prices in some communities might be higher or lower than the averages shown here.
