Fuel Forecast Calls for Stabilization

Phoenix, Ariz., July 16, 2010. While a wave of heat hits the state, a wave of stabilization is occurring at the gas pump. Statewide, today’s fuel price is relatively unchanged from last week at $2.761 per gallon. Nationwide, prices increased a penny this week to $2.723 per gallon.

This week, the price of crude oil continued to trade in the mid $70 range. The commodity’s current price, coupled with ample oil and gasoline supplies, have worked in favor of pump price stability as of late.

“Arizona fuel prices haven’t made much movement this week, as most changes have been a penny or less in either direction,” said Linda Gorman, communications and public affairs director for AAA Arizona. “Barring unforeseen circumstances, this trend will likely continue in the near future.”

Statewide, Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high fuel averages at $2.575 and $2.956 per gallon, respectively. In the lower 48 states, South Carolina and California hold these extremes at $2.475 and $3.144 per gallon, respectively.

*The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units. The BTU-adjusted price is calculated and displayed as part of AAA's Fuel Gauge Report because according to the Energy Information Administration, E-85 delivers approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. Because "flexible fuel" vehicles can operate on conventional fuel and E-85, the BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is essential to understanding the cost implications of each fuel choice for consumers.

AAA Arizona’s Weekly Fuel Gauge includes data from gasoline stations in every Arizona community. However, only major metropolitan areas are shown in the table above. Local prices in some communities might be higher or lower than the averages shown here.
