Phoenix, Ariz., July 22, 2010.The pump price stability Arizonans have enjoyed over the last three weeks may be nearing an end as hurricane season becomes more active. Statewide, today’s fuel price is 0.6 cents lower from last week at $2.755 per gallon. Nationwide, prices are unchanged from last week at $2.718 per gallon.
This week, the price of crude oil moved to the high $70 range after the National Hurricane Center reported the formation of a tropical depression in the Bahamas. The depression is expected to develop into a tropical storm and move into the U.S. Gulf Coast over the weekend.
In addition, a tropical weather system in the Atlantic is also projected to develop into a tropical storm in the coming days. The forecast for this storm calls for it to make landfall in the Caribbean and then again between the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana, according to Weather Underground, a meteorological website.
“Increasing storm threats and the likelihood of a storm heading toward the U.S. Gulf Coast is enough to raise commodity prices and tighten retail prices in the short-term,” said Linda Gorman, communications and public affairs director for AAA Arizona. “The extent of damage caused by one of these storms, if any, will determine the length of time market prices react to it.”
Statewide, Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high fuel averages at $2.574 and $2.959 per gallon, respectively. In the lower 48 states, South Carolina and California hold these extremes at $2.481 and $3.148 per gallon, respectively.

*The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units. The BTU-adjusted price is calculated and displayed as part of AAA's Fuel Gauge Report because according to the Energy Information Administration, E-85 delivers approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. Because "flexible fuel" vehicles can operate on conventional fuel and E-85, the BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is essential to understanding the cost implications of each fuel choice for consumers.
AAA Arizona’s Weekly Fuel Gauge includes data from gasoline stations in every Arizona community. However, only major metropolitan areas are shown in the table above. Local prices in some communities might be higher or lower than the averages shown here.
NOTE: AAA Fuel Gauge data should include attribution to AAA.
