Phoenix, Ariz., July 29, 2010. Across the state, motorists have likely noticed a slight increase in pump prices this week. Statewide, today’s fuel price is almost a penny higher this week at $2.764 per gallon. Nationwide, prices are up 2.6 cents this week at $2.744 per gallon.
After Tropical Storm Bonnie fizzled without any serious impact on Gulf operations this week, the price of crude oil flirted with $80 per barrel as increased demand figures emerged from the Department of Energy. In addition, the dollar suffered a one percent hit, which is considered a large move in the equity markets. However, the price of the commodity has since retracted to the upper $70 range as a result of healthy supplies and mixed economic data that surfaced this week.
“Looking ahead, market fundamentals are likely to keep prices in the $70-$80 per barrel range,” said Linda Gorman, communications and public affairs director for AAA Arizona. “With these conditions in place, prices are likely to remain relatively stable in the short-term, barring unforeseen circumstances.”
Statewide, Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high fuel averages at $2.579 and $2.951 per gallon, respectively. In the lower 48 states, South Carolina and California hold these extremes at $2.523 and $3.150 per gallon, respectively.

*The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units. The BTU-adjusted price is calculated and displayed as part of AAA's Fuel Gauge Report because according to the Energy Information Administration, E-85 delivers approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs by volume than conventional gasoline. Because "flexible fuel" vehicles can operate on conventional fuel and E-85, the BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is essential to understanding the cost implications of each fuel choice for consumers.
AAA Arizona’s Weekly Fuel Gauge includes data from gasoline stations in every Arizona community. However, only major metropolitan areas are shown in the table above. Local prices in some communities might be higher or lower than the averages shown here.
NOTE: AAA Fuel Gauge data should include attribution to AAA.
