AAA Celebrates 50 Million Members
One in four drivers in the United States belongs to AAA, the nation’s largest paid-membership group. AAA’s membership base now consists of 50 million drivers nationwide, with three-quarters of one million members in Arizona.
AAA was founded as a public service organization in 1902 by a handful of local automobile clubs. AAA Arizona, the Arizona affiliate of AAA, started nearly 80 years ago when two car clubs combined to create the Arizona Automobile Association. AAA Arizona officially joined the association on July 30, 1927 and will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year.
AAA Arizona is the sixth-fastest growing auto club with 744,526 members. In the past 12 months, AAA Arizona’s membership has grown by 34,526 members, which is a 5.6 percent increase from last year.
“Our continued growth, on both the local and national level, proves that our members are happy and continue to enjoy the convenience and peace of mind that AAA provides,” said Jim McDowell, AAA Arizona President. “We’ve been privileged to provide Arizona members with automotive, insurance and travel services for nearly 80 years. As Arizona has experienced immense growth during that time, AAA Arizona has been fortunate to experience a great deal of growth as well.”
Here are some facts about AAA Arizona:
- AAA Arizona is the 20th largest club in the AAA association. The largest AAA club is the Auto Club of Southern California with about 7.8 million members. The smallest, in Ohio, has approximately 13,700 members.

- AAA Arizona responds to 450,000 Emergency Road Service calls annually.
- AAA Arizona’s mobile battery service has helped start over 50,000 member vehicles and has sold over 20,000 batteries on the road.
“AAA is a name people trust,” said McDowell. “Our members know that whether they need travel assistance, gas prices or an insurance policy, we’re much more than a towing company, and we’re much more than we were when we started back in 1927.”
