AAA ARIZONA OFFERS TIPS ON SORTING OUT DRUG COSTS:
WHICH PLAN IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Phoenix, AZ. March 22, 2004 – As discount prescription drug cards flood the market, consumers may find it difficult deciding which one is right for them and the needs of their family. AAA Arizona says it’s important to look at the differences between each discount drug plan because plans that may appear similar…can be very different.

“Even if you already have a discount prescription plan or Medicare one of the discount cards may offer a better price than your co-payment or provide a discount on drugs not covered by your plan,“ said Tom Wilt Managing Director of AAA Partnership Programs.

In addition to Medicare approved discount cards, there are many companies that are offering discount prescription drug cards… but customers are having to sort through tons of information to find a program that works best for them. AAA is making the process easier by providing a prescription discount card as part of the AAA member benefit.

Any AAA member who buys a prescription drug that is not covered by insurance could save an average of 15 percent on brand name drugs and an average of 35 percent on generics – sometimes even more. There are over 52,000 pharmacies nationwide that participate in AAA Prescription Savings program. Some of the Arizona pharmacy participants are; Eckerd Drugs, Osco, Walgreens, plus in-store pharmacies at Target, and Frys, just to name a few.

AAA suggests consumers consider these tips when determining which program best meets their needs.

  • Check whether or not there is an annual fee. Some providers charge an annual fee and may also charge an additional fee for a spouse or family member. AAA members do not pay an annual fee.
  • Find out which pharmacies will accept the discount card and how convenient it is to use. There are 52,000 pharmacies nationwide, which participate in the AAA program.
  • Compare the complete picture for each discount card. A greater discount on the prescriptions that you order may equate to a higher annual fee. The AAA card is free to members.
  • If you travel extensively you may want to consider whether you will be able to use the discount card in other parts of the country.
  • Find out if your family is covered. Some discount cards cover family members and even pet medications.
  • Make a list of the prescriptions your family needs and research the discounts available for those drugs on each program.
  • It might pay to subscribe to two or more cards then use the one that gives you the most benefit on a particular prescription.  But, take into consideration the fees on the cards.
