Every 30 seconds a vehicle is stolen in the U.S., according to the FBI. While auto theft rates have declined in recent years, car theft remains a common crime. In fact, nearly 26,000 vehicles were stolen in Arizona in 2009, according to the agency.
VIN etching is a process where the vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is etched into all of the window glass on a vehicle. The etching serves as a permanent fingerprint of your vehicle, making it less attractive to car thieves thereby reducing the probability of theft. This makes VIN etching a small, but effective anti-theft measure.
As a theft deterrent measure, AAA Insurance and the Phoenix Police Department are partnering to offer free vehicle VIN etching events at a number of AAA branch offices in 2011.

The process takes about 10 minutes. Drivers must present their vehicle registration and proof of insurance prior to the etching. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 602-241-2945 or email publicrelations@arizona.aaa.com.
Additional events will be planned for later in 2011. To see a schedule for upcoming events visit AAA Offices Events Calendar.
Ensure your car is protected against theft with these additional tips:
- Always lock your vehicle with the windows closed. Even if you park your vehicle in a garage, this simple measure is added security.
- Never leave belongings out in the open in your car as they could tempt thieves.
- Never leave your keys in your vehicle or leave your vehicle running any time you are not in it.
- Keep your vehicle in secure, well-lit areas. When possible, park in a locked garage. Also, consider installing a motion-activated floodlight that illuminates the place where your car is parked.
